Polyvagal Ladder

Your nervous system has states, and you can learn to notice them.

Educational model. We label every concept honestly, and say so when it's a teaching model. How we rate evidence.

Shrink Definition

The polyvagal ladder is Deb Dana's practical extension of Stephen Porges's polyvagal theory. It presents the autonomic nervous system as three states arranged like rungs on a ladder: ventral vagal (safe and social), sympathetic (mobilized, fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, collapse). The ladder metaphor helps people notice which state they're in and practice moving toward the ventral state. Polyvagal theory itself remains debated in neuroscience, and the ladder is best taught as a working model rather than settled biology.

Plain language

The polyvagal ladder is a picture of three nervous system states you can learn to notice and move between.

Shrink Insight

You can't think your way into safety. You have to signal it to your body.

Why it matters

The polyvagal ladder is used in: trauma informed therapy, somatic practice, self regulation training, and helping people who feel stuck between numb and overwhelmed.

Common misunderstanding

Polyvagal theory is a model, not settled anatomy. The specific brain circuitry Porges proposed is contested. The clinical usefulness of the ladder doesn't depend on winning that debate.

Shrink Perspective

You don't fix a shutdown state with logic. You warm it up with breath, movement, voice, and connection.

Shrink Reflection

Which rung do you spend the most time on in an average week?

Shrink Journal

Describe a recent moment on each rung. What moved you between them?

Shrink Step

Today, do one thing that reliably brings you closer to ventral safety: slow breathing, humming, a walk, a conversation with someone easy.

Shrink Minute

Notice the state before you try to change the thought.

Shrink Takeaway

Safety is a state, not just a fact.

Medical boundary

This concept is educational and shouldn't be used to self-diagnose. It doesn't replace care from a licensed clinician. Symptoms, medication, and treatment decisions should be discussed with a qualified professional, and emergency symptoms require emergency care.

Evidence summary

Polyvagal theory as a full neuroanatomical claim remains contested. The three state framework as a clinical teaching tool has emerging support for helping people build interoceptive awareness. Label as educational model, not settled neuroscience.
